Privacy Policy

Pentimento is made by Engel Photographic LLC. This policy describes what information the app collects, how it's used, and your rights around it. We keep this short because we don't do much with your data — the app exists to show you history, not to harvest information about you.

What we collect

When you use Pentimento, we may collect:

Email address — when you sign in via email one-time code.
Display name — a name you choose within the app. It doesn't have to be your real name.
Location — your precise location, used to find historical photographs near you and to send proximity notifications when you pass a significant spot. Location is processed on-device to determine what's nearby; we don't store a history of your movements.
Account identifier — a unique ID tied to your account, used to save your preferences and activity.
Interactions — likes, dislikes, saves, and views you take on photographs. Used to personalize your experience and improve the archive.
Purchase history — whether you've subscribed to Pentimento Plus. Payments are processed entirely by Apple; we never see your card information.
Photo corrections — if you submit a correction to a photograph's location, we store your proposed coordinates and any note you include.

What we don't collect

We don't collect your contacts, browsing history, health data, photos from your camera roll, microphone or camera input, or any advertising identifiers. We have no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the app.

How we use it

To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
To show you historical photographs near your current location.
To send proximity and daily notifications (only if you've enabled them).
To save your preferences across devices.
To improve the geographic accuracy of the archive over time.

We don't sell your data. We don't use it for advertising. We don't share it with third parties except as described below.

Third parties

Pentimento uses a small number of services to operate:

Supabase — our backend database and authentication provider. Your account data and interactions are stored on Supabase's infrastructure. Supabase Privacy Policy.
Apple — Sign in with Apple and StoreKit handle authentication and payments. Apple's privacy practices govern those flows. Apple Privacy Policy.

Data retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, your personal information is deleted from our systems within 30 days. Aggregated, anonymized usage data (such as total view counts on photographs) may be retained indefinitely.

Your rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time by contacting us at jake@pentimento.app. If you're in the EU or California, you have additional rights under GDPR and CCPA respectively — the same address applies.

Children

Pentimento is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.

Changes

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
